Helen Thomas Moving Back After 46 Years Down Front
By: Mike Allen
February 20, 2007 04:47 PM EST

Every theater-style seat in the White House briefing room, now closed for renovation, had a brass plaque inscribed with the name of a news organization. Only one, in the middle of the front row, had a name: “HELEN THOMAS,” it said. The unique assigned seat between the chairs for CBS News and ABC News was reserved for the legendary United Press International correspondent who is now a columnist for Hearst Newspapers.

The press corps is scheduled to move from temporary facilities back into the spiffed-up, rewired briefing room in May or June. Thomas, who has been questioning presidents and press secretaries for 46 years, plans to be there. But her front-row seat won’t be. Plans call for her to be moved to the second row to make room for a cable news channel – a sign of Washington’s changing pecking order, and of the new ways that Americans get their news.

“I didn’t think I had a monopoly on that seat,” Thomas, 86, said in a telephone interview. “Since my peers have decided that I don’t belong there, I’ll bow to their – I’ll drink the – What did Socrates drink?”

Hemlock?

“I’ll drink it,” she said. “You have to submit to the will of the people, and apparently this is the will of my peers. It’s OK with me. I’ve had a good run in the front seat.”

John Kerry on Britain's phased withdrawal: “America’s leading ally in Iraq has decided that a timetable for the phased redeployment of troops is the only responsible policy to help force Iraqis to stand up for Iraq. After years of touting Prime Minister Blair’s resolve, the Administration should now pay attention to his new policy. This announcement makes it all the more inexplicable that the President and leading Republicans actually want to send more American troops into the middle of an Iraqi civil war.”

toniD,

I'm wondering how the legal world is going to view, on the one hand, a guy who lied under oath about an extra-marital affair and, on the other hand, a guy who lied under oath because he was too busy being a Republican administration lacky to accurately remember the truth.

The opening words in the seven hours of recorded testimony played for the trial jury offer Fitzgerald's admonition (and offer) to Libby that any statement is given under oath and the option is always present to not answer (or, implied, that no answer may be given because Libby's memory is known to be unreliable to Libby himself).

If the "gee whiz, who knew that the whirling dervish that is White House employment would make me state falsehoods under oath?" defense works, then testimony to a Grand Jury means nothing.

Today's Must Read
By Paul Kiel - February 20, 2007, 8:45 AM
With Scooter Libby's trial speeding to a close, the focus today is partly on Libby, but mostly on the man behind the curtain for all of Plamegate: Vice President Cheney.

In National Journal, Murray Waas reports on the ugly facts Cheney avoided having to publicly confront when Libby's defense team suddenly decided not to call him to testify:

At the time that Libby offered his explanation to Cheney [in the fall of 2003, after the Plame investigation had begun], the vice president already had reason to know that Libby's account to him was untrue, according to sources familiar with still-secret grand jury testimony and evidence in the CIA leak probe, as well as testimony made public during Libby's trial over the past three weeks in federal court.
Yet, according to Libby's own grand jury testimony, which was made public during his trial in federal court, Cheney did nothing to discourage Libby from telling that story to the FBI and the federal grand jury. Moreover, Cheney encouraged then-White House press secretary Scott McClellan to publicly defend Libby, according to other testimony and evidence made public during Libby's trial.

the pentagon recently found it had too many staff seargents and offered an early retirement bonus. They promised any seargent who retired straight away his full annual benefits plus $1,000 for every inch measured in a straight line between any two parts of the seargent's body, with the seargent getting to select any pair of points he wished.

The first man, an Air Force seargent, accepted. He asked the pension man to measure from the top of his head to the tip of his toes. Six feet. He walked out with a check of $72,000.

The second man, an Army seargent, asked them to measure from the tip of his outstretched hands to his toes. Eight feet. He walked out with a check for $96,000.

When the third seargent, a grizzled old Marine, was asked where to measure, he told the pension man ... "From the tip of my penis to the bottom of my testicles."

The pension man suggested that perhaps the Marine seargent might like to reconsider, pointing out the nice checks the previous two seargent had received. The Marine insisted and the pension expert said that would be fine, but that he'd better get the medical officer to do the measuring.

The medical officer attended and asked the seargent to drop the pants. He did. The medical officer placed the tape on the tip of the seargent's penis and began to work back. "My God!" he said. "Where are your testicles?"

The seargent replied, "In Iraq."

Tony Snow and White House Reporters Slam The ‘Hateful,’ ‘Polarized’ Blogosphere
In a press roundtable at the National Press Club tonight, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow led a discussion with White House correspondents about the impact of the internet on their respective jobs. Their conclusion? They don’t like being challenged by blogs.

NBC News’ David Gregory bemoaned how political coverage has “become so polarized in this country…because it’s the internet and the blogs that have really used this White House press conferences to somehow support positions out in America, political views.” Tony Snow admitted he sometimes reads blogs (”I’ll occasionally punch it up”) only to find “wonderful, imaginative hateful stuff that comes flying out.”

Newsweek’s White House correspondent Richard Wolffe added, “[Bloggers] want us to play a role that isn’t really our role. Our role is to ask questions and get information. … It’s not a chance for the opposition to take on the government and grill them to a point where they throw their hands up and surrender.”

Correspondent Lowell Bergman interviews reporters facing jail for refusing to reveal their sources and asks how much the press can reveal about secret government programs in the war on terror without jeopardizing national security. FRONTLINE examines how much of this battle is politics and whether such reporting actually harms national security. (more »)

Big Brother Is Watching You
By: Nicole Belle @ 6:22 PM - PST
Texas Kaos:

Last month I wrote about a story I've been following: the case of domestic spying on major American data carriers. At the time, using information available online as well as several news sources, I put forth some speculation.

First, that innocent Americans' data is being swept up and stored thanks to the use of the "full pipe" data gathering technique. Second, that the government's Total Information Awareness Program - which was "killed" but never defunded - was being used to build domestic spying facilities around the country.

I caught PBS's NOW program last Friday by chance, and I'm glad I did. They have resources not available to this lowly blogger. What PBS discovered will chill your bones. Yes, data on innocent Americans is being intercepted and stored. Additionally, more whistleblowers have come forward to establish the existence of another secret spy room on AT&T's network, built post 9-11.

The key findings in PBS's report:

The government is intercepting most emails sent domestically.
AT&T is collecting most emails and sharing them with the government, specifically the NSA (this is backed up by Klein's documents).
The NSA spy room at AT&T's San Francisco facility is only accessible to the NSA and AT&T employees cleared by the NSA.
The NSA's interest seems to be in MAE WEST, *the* major hub of American and international internet traffic on the West Coast.
The device installed in San Francisco is capable of intercepting 10 GIGBYTES of data per second. In layman's terms, that means it could go through all the information in all the books in the Library of Congress in 15 minutes.
