What's happening today?

Libby's defense misled the court. Many of the judge's decisions on what he would allow in court pertaining to classified evidence was based on Libby's defence saying Libby would testify.

Nearly a dozen Republican congressmen broke ranks with party leaders Wednesday to endorse a resolution opposing President Bush's plan to send more than 21,000 additional troops to Iraq. More Here

Former Bush National Security Council official Flynt Leverett, speaking on Wednesday at a forum held by the New America Foundation, told a crowd in a Senate office building that in 2003 then-Secretary of State Colin Powell received a “grand bargain” offer from Iran and was rebuffed by the White House. The Bush administration plans to allow thousands of Iraqi refugees to settle in the United States over the next year, a huge expansion at a time of mounting international pressure to help millions who have fled their homes in the nearly four-year-old war.casualties.

From firedoglake, the Libby Trial Jury's Valentine's day surprise:

When the jurors came in 45 minutes ago for the final evidence presented in this case, 13 of the 14 juros (12 jurors and 2 alternates) were wearing bright red t-shirts with a large white heart on the front. The shirts appeared to be new… The one juror not wearing a red shirt was an elderly woman who works as an art curator. A man on the jury, who is a retired school teacher originally from north carolina, then read a statement to the court. The man said the jury wanted to "thank the clerks, marshalls, and judge for all of the accomodations made" for the jury during this trial. The juror then said the entire jury understands their responsibilities in this case and that their "unanimity may now go no further." "But on behalf of the jury," said this man, "we want to wish everybody a Happy Valentine's day."

To say this moment was awkward would be an understatement. All of the attorneys, and the judge, appeared on the edge of their seats. At the conclusion of the juror's statement, the attorneys nervously and politely clapped…and the judge sheepishly thanked the panel for being "a very attentive jury." Then, the judge moved on…

Hi Toni!

Happy Valentine's Day!

SO the defense rested on Libby today. And it was lame.

Asked by an ABC reporter whether he thought Iraq was roiled by civil war, Bush said, "It's hard for me living in this beautiful White House to give you an assessment, a first hand assessment. I haven't been there. You have, I haven't. But I do talk to people who are and people whose judgment I trust and they would not qualify it as that. There are others who think it is."

Huffington Post has the video from CNN.

My guess is that it says that each member shares a sense of humor and that they were (unconsciously, perhaps) demonstrating a vested power that they don't normally enjoy.

And maybe it was a veiled statement to the attorneys! I don't think they were in the court when the judge issued his statement though. Too bad.

An open letter to Big Ed
Someone sent me a link to your extended on air comments regarding Air America Radio today and the possibility occurred to me that perhaps your remarks were ultimately not about my asking for listener support for Thom Hartmann on AARXM 167. I’m concerned I have become a surrogate for some previously unexpressed ill will and general disagreement you've been harboring against Al, Randi, Mike Malloy, the very idea of Air America Radio, and some other segments of the progressive movement and media.

It has been suggested to me that it is not a coincidence that your comments yesterday come shortly after your move to 12-3 pm est and the day before Al leaves radio where he has been doing his show in that time slot for nearly three years. This explanation is a bit cynical for me, though I must admit I am at a bit of a loss as to your reaction yesterday.

I never imagined that advocating that Air America affiliates, including AARXM, carry Air America programming would hurt your feelings, nor was it my intention to offend you. I have always felt competition between Jones Media progressive programming and AAR was healthy and would promote more and more progressive talk. Surely, any plans that XM may or may not have to carry you on the AARXM channel did not come about without lobbying by your representatives. I do not fault you, your Executive Producers or Jones for this, of course, it is the nature of our business or any business. I am confident, that if you truly feel uncomfortable associating your brand and name with Air America Radio on XM your representatives could request that you not be carried on the AARXM channel.

While I know that we have some disagreements politically, (your intense support of pro escalation Joe Lieberman, my intense support of the netroots, etc.) ultimately, we share a lot more political values, not to mention a love of fly fishing and beer, than not. It pains me to see you do this disservice to yourself and progressive media in general.

I will continue to support my friend and co-worker Thom Hartmann, not because anyone has paid me to or even asked me to, but because it goes to the heart of who I am. But please know, I hope this is not taken as an offense by you. I continue to believe and hope you will have more success in the future,

all the best

UPDATE This site has been slammed with huge traffic today- and we have been inoperable most of the day. As you can see, comments have yet to be restored and we have lost the section to the right. We are working on it.

Second Update I've been asked to highlight a link in the above post. This one. It is a post by ex-cia agent, Larry Johnson of No Quarter. In it he retells how he became persona non grata at the Ed Schultz Show because Ed resented Larry's praise of Keith Olbermann.
