Oscar Night Open Thread

Update: Al Gore got the Oscar and didn't announce his run for the Presidency. Congratulations!

Seymour Hersh has more on Iran in the New Yorker. He also discussed what was in his column with Wolf Blitzer on CNN.

Here's the link to the New Yorker.

And here is the video from Crooks and Liars of Hersh on CNN.

Here's en excerpt:
The President is taking his notion of executive privilege to the extreme—-running covert operations, using money that's not authorized by Congress…Negroponte is too ethical for Cheney…

Hersh: There has been some violence. So America, my country, without telling Congress, using funds not appropriated, I don't know where, by my sources believe much of the money obviously came from Iraq where there is all kinds of piles of loose money, pools of cash that could be used for covert operations.

All of this should be investigated by Congress, by the way, and I trust it will be. In my talking to membership — members there, they are very upset that they know nothing about this. And they have great many suspicions.

We are simply in a situation where this president is really taking his notion of executive privilege to the absolute limit here, running covert operations, using money that was not authorized by Congress, supporting groups indirectly that are involved with the same people that did 9/11, and we should be arresting these people rather than looking the other way…

He — that is one of the reasons, I was told. Negroponte also was not in tune with Cheney. There was a lot of complaints about him because he was seen as much of a stickler, too ethical for some of the operations the Pentagon wants to run.

Hey Crank,

Seems that way doesn't it. But it's all because of the oil.

Al Gore got the Oscar for "An Inconvenient Truth" Jesus camp was up for an Oscar! I didn't know that.

tonid, thanks for all the info. it's been extremely helpful. a great way to catch up quickly after being away and now facing a mountain of work.

i guess it's a good thing politically that gore won, but from what i've heard, in terms of documentary filmmaking, 'darwin's nightmare' should have got it. i'm rooting for 'babel' for best picture. just think we need more multilingual, multicultural films.

now to work. have a great evening. someone post the oscar results, please, since i can't watch them. have fun, crank and tonid.

Watermain Break Swamps Cars in Manhattan

Oops.

Manhattan watermain breaks are common especially in winter.

I saw one on 5th Ave. & 19th St.
that looked like a Moon crater.

The water flooded basements of
businesses and commercial
buildings for about a block in every direction.

You've got to see this:

Check out the photo essay. There's an image that describes
what's down there.

The street looked like it
was hit by a cruise missle. :)

As I recall shortly after that
there was another break a block away on 6th Ave.

Sometimes the breaks flood
train stations and tunnels.

Many of the water mains in NYC
are old and close to the surface.
Breaks are prevelant in winter.
There's always construction and
heavy traffic. 5th Ave. & 19th St.
is a commercial area in NYC.

Why do you feel bad about "getting out"?
Survivor guilt?

There was no water to flush toilets.
Electrical and phone svc. was
knocked out in some buildings. If
you worked on a high floor in a
building with no electrical you entered
a building down the block took the
elevator up and walked across the roof. 5th Ave. & 19th St...

Barnes & Noble is over there.
There are a lot of motion picture

good morning T!

you're up early, me too.

my early warning paperboy alarms

went off at 4 AM here, 6 AM your time.

had an interesting conversation with Laura Flanders and her guest Allison Fine yesterday.

they invited me and us AAR bloggers to participate in a project they have planned for her upcoming book tour.

i was hoping to hear a rebroadcast of the show on AAR to get the details down, but no such luck. basically it's an opportunity to phone in and blog newscasts from our local areas on her weekend shows with an emphasis on what we'd like more people to know about regarding our localities.

that sound like something you'd be interested in? i'd think written submissions would be welcome if you're not interested in voice submissions.

(Updated) The White House website is getting scrubbed
by smintheus
Sun Feb 25, 2007 at 12:39:00 PM PST
On March 16, 2003 Dick Cheney went on Meet the Press. His absurd claims in that interview have since become politically embarrassing to the White House. For example, he declared...

I think things have gotten so bad inside Iraq, from the standpoint of the Iraqi people, my belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators.

You won't any longer find a link to this transcript on the White House website—nor, indeed, are there links to most of Cheney's interviews from before 2006. Don't believe me? Just do a search for that infamous sentence at www.whitehouse.gov.

The WH website evidently has been busy scrubbing links to interviews and perhaps other public appearances by top officials. The operation has proceeded somewhat unevenly, though aggressively. Pretty clearly the WH wants to make it much harder to research the administration's past pronouncements, especially unscripted ones, and especially those pertaining to Iraq.

in my conversation with Laura on what would improve her blog i mentioned archives and two way communication. she was very receptive to those ideas and asked for submissions.

i've always liked that she reads her blogs and posts sometimes during her shows as well as recognising individuals and thanking them for their contributions.

Allison Fine is an interesting lady, she's written a book on using the web for social change.

Momentum: Igniting Social Change in the Connected Age.

heres the blurb:

"A new and empowering way of looking at and organizing social change! How can we move from serving soup until our elbows ache to solving chronic social ills like hunger or homelessness? How can we break the disastrous cycle of low expectations that leads to chronic social failures?

The answers to these questions lie within Momentum, a fresh, zestful way of thinking about and organizing social change work.

Today's digital tools—including but not limited to e-mail, the Web, cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), even iPods—promote interactivity and connectedness. But as Momentum shows, these new social media tools are important not for their wizardry but because they connect us to one another in inexpensive, accessible, and massively scalable ways.

Christabel Nsiah-Buadi is Senior Producer of RadioNation with Laura Flanders, she called me at home during the show to invite me to talk with them that evening....

how's that for unusual? Christabel has a wicked sense of humor and is a delight to talk with off the air.

i've called in to join the cue before and had good short yaks with her before.

no podcasts yet either.

i get to suggest a few things supposedly so i'll be putting some time into that project this week.

i'll keep you in the loop, i'd love your opinion on this project.

do you ever listen to Laura's show?

Greenspan warns of likely U.S. recession

HONG KONG - Former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan warned Monday that the American economy might slip into recession by year's end.

He said the U.S. economy has been expanding since 2001 and that there are signs the current economic cycle is coming to an end.

"When you get this far away from a recession invariably forces build up for the next recession, and indeed we are beginning to see that sign," Greenspan said via satellite link to a business conference in Hong Kong. "For example in the U.S., profit margins ... have begun to stabilize, which is an early sign we are in the later stages of a cycle."

"While, yes, it is possible we can get a recession in the latter months of 2007, most forecasters are not making that judgment and indeed are projecting forward into 2008 ... with some slowdown," he said.

Greenspan said that while it would be "very precarious" to try to forecast that far into the future, he could not rule out the possibility of a recession late this year.

The U.S. economy grew at a surprisingly strong 3.5 percent rate in the fourth quarter of 2006, up from a 2 percent rate in the third quarter. A survey released Monday by the National Association for Business Economics showed that experts predict economic growth of 2.7 percent this year, the slowest rate since a 1.6 percent rise in 2002.

Congrats Al Gore! Congrats Melissa!
Great to see her again and hear her fine rock voice. Very inspirational song, wasn't it?

Thumbs down for "I don't want to be here" Nanny Jerry Seinfeld who did his utmost best to waste five precious minutes with his stop the greening of America or whatever that was mambojambo. Five minutes someone like Leonardo Dicaprio would have appreciated to educate and inspire the audiences worlwide re global warming.

Ellen Degeneres was a picture of cool and v. charming - a huge improvement over oh so terrified Stewart and also oh so terrified Rock. But please, give me back the good old days. But lets face it, its not ED's fault that free speech is a thing of the past at the Oscars. Read a view reviews and thought: Stop complaining already while sitting safely tucked behind your desks, you oh so "courageous" punditry.

Regarding Ellen's joke during the Academy Awards:

She said (I'm paraphrasing wildly here) that America voted against Jennifer Hudson on American Idol, and here she is at the Academy Awards vying for an Oscar. America voted for Al Gore and here he is at the Academy Awards, vying for an Oscar. Go figure.
-----
It was (is) a classical "juxtaposition" joke and exactly as subtle as it needed to be.
----
Yes. It was masterful. I was happy to hear it and thrilled for the Gores.

I do admire ED for hosting the Oscars with such ease and joy.

btw. same here. No jumping around on the net for me ... and if there is one thing I don't care for its being jerked around. I refuse.

P.S.

forgot to mention, however, that I do miss the MRR blog and hope for the best ...

just read Richard Cohen's outrageously disingenuous Gore article and got a rant in my head a mile long. So I'll make it short:

No, Mr. Cohen, its not a joke. You are a joke! And stupid. Its thanks to you and your club that Bush is in the WH today.

There. My rant in a nutshell ;-)
